On Saturday, August 31, Copenhagen Cooking focuses on the UN World Goal 11, which deals with "Sustainable Cities and Communities" and this calls for a celebration of the festivals own home town, Copenhagen.

Celebrating Copenhagen can be done with the citys very own culinary specialty; Smørrebrød. This special highly built open face sandwich was invented here in the late 1800s, and it spread to the entire country becoming one of the most popular danish eats.

Its popularity vaned in the 1980s, but at the turn of the century, in the airstream of New Nordic Cuisine, smørrebrød was reinvented and grew stronger than ever with many new restaurants opening. Last year the Copenhagen Smørrebrød received international recognition, when Lonely Planet Guides named Smørrebrød the 6th best eat in their guide The Worlds 500 Best Eats.

We celebrate this with "Copenhagen's Best Smørrebrød 2019", where we have invited the top of the Copenhagen Smørrebrød scene to participate with their bid for the best sustainable, tasty and locally rooted smørrebrød.

The invited restaurants are:

  • Restaurant Palægade
Named Smørrebrød of the Year 2018 by the Association of Danish Restaurant Critics

  • Selma
Received a "Bib Gourmand" (special award) of the Michelin Guide in 2019.

  • Restaurant Kronborg
Nominated for The City's Best Lunch 2019 by newspaper Berlingske Tidende.

  • Hallernes Smørrebrød
Denmark's largest smørrebrød chain with 4 outlets in Copenhagen

  • Restaurant Schønnemann
Recommended by Lonely Planet as one of the world's best 'eats' in 2018 (remember link)

  • Aamanns
Adam Aamann is known as “Denmark's king of smørrebrød”, and he is the man who invented the 'modern open face sandwich'.

With the smørrebrød we serve an ice-cold organic Jacobsen draft beer, and a shot of aquavit. The aquavit and snap enthusiasts from Spirikum join us and serve good spirits stories with the food (in Danish)

The ticket includes:

  • Six pieces of signature smørrebrød (NOTE: small pieces, but six should be enough to get a full meal)

  • A glass of organic festival beer from Husbryggeriet Jacobsen

  • An aquavit shot to go with the food
